In practice we have found that the availability of the system is determined by the reliability of the network rather than anything else. Reliable network equipment and proper network monitoring and management is therefore advised.
Wide Area Network (WAN) The system requires dependable and secure connectivity between the sites. To ensure security a dedicated network is advised. A dedicated network is best but the network infrastructure may be shared with other systems if proper care is taken. Between the CDC and the CDRC a higher bandwidth, redundant link is advisable. A detailed network design, in conjunction with a network provider, or a comprehensive reliable enterprise network, is required.
The CDC will be duplicated in a Cloud Disaster Recovery Centre (CDRC) which must be located at a different site. The data will be replicated in almost real time from the CDC to CDRC. In case of a disaster at the CDC, e.g. fire, service delivery will proceed from the CDRC after a short interruption.
The system architecture provides fully secured interfaces to public internet and mobile phone networks. This allows integration of system functionality with other web portals, or with a dedicated web portal, enabling the public to interact directly with the system using a web browser. In similar way, the public can also use a smart phone to interact with the system.
Legacy and open standards-based interfaces to other internal and external systems are possible. This will provide for batch upload/download of data, data synchronization and real time, bi-directional transaction processing on other systems.
